Taiwan chipmaker TSMC explores Texas investment to expand production in the US
The chipmaker said U.S. customers want more AI capacity as its annual capital spending rises to $60 billion to $64 billion.
- On Thursday, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei announced the company is evaluating Texas for potential expansion and discussing collaboration with Elon Musk's Terafab project to meet surging U.S. customer demand.
- TSMC is already heavily invested in Arizona, where planned spending has reached $265 billion across six semiconductor plants and two advanced packaging facilities, prompting the company to diversify its U.S. manufacturing footprint.
- Addressing competition from Intel Corp's EMIB-T packaging technology, Wei highlighted TSMC's market position, noting the company produces 5.5-reticle size CoWoS chips with "excellent" yields that he claimed no competitor currently matches.
- Wei emphasized that any resulting Terafab facility must be operated by TSMC to ensure production control, though he noted arrangements with the project "had not been determined" at the discussion stage.
- Driven by surging artificial intelligence demand, TSMC expects its 2-nanometer capacity to more than double next year, while trial production for the A14 process is slated for 2027 to support future technological advancements.
