Taiwan chipmaker TSMC explores Texas investment to expand production in the US
TSMC said Texas is among options for expansion as it lifted annual capital spending to $60 billion to $64 billion after a record quarterly profit.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. announced on Thursday it is exploring potential Texas investments to expand chip production, following a record quarterly profit driven by strong artificial intelligence demand.
To support U.S. technology giants Nvidia and Apple, TSMC has pledged $265 billion for Arizona facilities, including $100 billion committed in July.
For the July-September quarter, TSMC reported a record nearly $24 billion in net profit, rising 69% year-on-year, while revenue surged 51% to $46 billion.
TSMC is discussing participation in Elon Musk's planned "Terafab" Texas complex, though Chairman and CEO Wei stressed that any plant TSMC occupies must be run by the company.
Wei cautioned that macroeconomic uncertainties and rising component prices pose future challenges, as annual capital expenditure is now budgeted between $60 billion and $64 billion.
