Alabama City Tables Plan to Shoot Stray Dogs Amid Public Outcry
The plan included sedation and a private contractor, but officials said a .22-caliber shooting option was never approved.
Sylacauga city leaders tabled a controversial proposal to shoot stray dogs following public backlash, removing the plan from consideration entirely.
The proposal, which appeared on Facebook, suggested hiring a private company for sedation but included using a.22 caliber rifle, triggering community outrage.
Mayor Matt Hubbard condemned the shooting option as 'inhumane,' stating, 'We're not going to shoot animals,' as the city explores alternatives with the Greater Birmingham Humane Society.
With the shooting plan off the table, the Sylacauga City Council will meet next week to vote on new strategies for managing stray dog overpopulation.
Officials are currently addressing the issue, which involves at least 10 dogs roaming near a shopping center, while the city recently launched a spay and neuter clinic.
