Syilx Okanagan file emergency order for Canada to save southern B.C. caribou
The Nation says logging has left just 8 caribou in one herd and about 27 in another, while federal law allows emergency intervention.
- On May 28, the Syilx Okanagan Nation filed for a federal emergency order under Section 80 of Canada's Species at Risk Act to protect threatened southern mountain caribou, citing the species' decline as an infringement on fundamental rights.
- Despite the Syilx Okanagan Nation Chiefs enacting a tribal caribou protection order in October, the Nation argues current recovery measures have failed to address ongoing habitat destruction across caribou ranges.
- West of Revelstoke, the Frisby-Boulder herd is functionally extinct with eight caribou, while the Central Selkirk herd sits at around 27 caribou and the Columbia North herd, roughly 185 strong, remains most likely to survive.
- Federal Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin must now determine if the caribou face an imminent threat, a rare Section 80 legal action used only three times previously for the greater-sage grouse and western chorus frog.
- Only about 35 per cent of core Columbia North forest habitat is currently protected, leaving conservation specialist Eddie Petryshen to warn that decisions made today will shape the last three herds' longevity for decades.
