Sydney veteran calls time on decorated career: ‘Nothing left’
Rampe ends a 14-season career as one of Sydney’s most decorated players, leaving the Swans with a major leadership gap.
On Friday, Sydney Swans champion Dane Rampe announced his retirement from the AFL, ending a 14-season career spanning 289 games. The 36-year-old defender leaves as one of the club's most decorated players.
Drafted as a rookie in 2012, Rampe became a club stalwart, earning All-Australian honors in 2016 and the Bob Skilton Medallist in 2019. He co-captained the team from 2019 to 2023.
Rampe's departure compounds significant experience losses for coach Dean Cox, as star defender Nick Blakey moved to North Melbourne and Harry Cunningham joined Adelaide. Skipper Callum Mills also faces sidelining for the 2027 season with an ACL injury.
Following Sydney's shattering preliminary final loss to Fremantle, Rampe decided to retire. He served as stand-in captain in his final match and leaves without a premiership, having played in four grand-final defeats between 2014 and 2024.
Former coach John Longmire praised Rampe's mental resilience, saying, "No player has been more trusted by his coaches and teammates than Dane Rampe." His versatility and leadership defined a generation of Swans players.
