Sweeping Income Tax Relief Package Voted On By GA Senate
Senate Bill 476 raises standard deductions and starts a six-year plan to cut income tax to 4.99%, aiming to benefit up to two-thirds of Georgia residents, lawmakers said.
- On Thursday, the Georgia Senate passed Senate Bill 476, a Republican-backed measure that would eliminate state income taxes for two-thirds of Georgians and now heads to the Georgia House of Representatives after a 32-18 vote.
- Sen. Blake Tillery sponsored SB 476, which fast-tracked last Friday, raising deductions from $24,000 to $100,000 and from $12,000 to $50,000, as part of a six-year plan to eliminate the income tax.
- Individuals earning $50,000 or less would see state income taxes eliminated in year one, with families making $100,000 or less and families above those thresholds saving about $5,200 annually; the plan proposes reducing the rate to 4.49% starting in 2027.
- Voicing opposition, Atlanta Democrat Sonya Halpern said, `This is not a debate about whether we want affordability or not,` as Democrats warned the bill would not help middle-income Georgians.
- In the broader state context, Georgia is one of at least nine states that recently cut income taxes, with opponents warning of a $9 billion revenue shortfall.
