Sweden Pledges $1.4 Bn for Ukraine Air Defence, Drones

  • Sweden, the Swedish government, announced on Thursday a 12.9 billion crown military aid package for Ukraine, including air defence and long-range missiles.
  • The move continues Sweden's long-running support, as Jonson said the package is Sweden's 21st since Russia's invasion and part of a 40 billion crown framework for 2026.
  • About $470 million will fund advanced short-range air defence systems, while the remaining $620 million supports drones, vessels, innovation, and procurement, Jonson said.
  • The announcement raises Sweden's cumulative support to $11.4 billion since 2022, Jonson said, with parts of the package designed to protect critical infrastructure and civilian population centres.
  • Stockholm also said it will provide guarantees to the World Bank for a 2.5 billion crown loan to Ukraine as the Geneva peace talks ended on Wednesday without a breakthrough.
