El Monte Man Charged with Murder in Pursuit Crash that Killed Alhambra Police Officer
Steven Zapata faces up to 80 years for causing a fatal crash while fleeing police that killed Officer Alec Sanders and passenger Gabriela Moreno, officials said.
- Monday, the Los Angeles County District Attorney charged Steven Ara Zapata, 27, with two counts of murder related to the Nov. 20 crash that killed Alhambra police Officer Alec Sanders and Gabriela Moreno, prosecutors said Zapata faces up to 80 years in prison if convicted.
- Zapata allegedly fled city police in a stolen Hyundai SUV before crashing around 3 a.m. at Valley Boulevard and Edgewood Drive, after officers responded to pursuit reports.
- Alhambra Police Chief Garrett Kennedy said Felipe Ramirez was hospitalized with major injuries, including at least one bone fracture, after the crash. A vigil for Officer Alec Sanders is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Nov. 25 at the Alhambra police station.
- The defendant remains hospitalized and is not expected to appear in court until next week, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said.
- Court records show Zapata also faces two counts of fleeing a pursuing peace officer's motor vehicle causing death and one count of reckless driving, while California Highway Patrol says it is unclear whether the Alhambra police cruiser had lights and sirens.
