Suspect charged with murder in killing of Katie Suarez
Police charged a former city Department of Education worker in the fatal stabbing, and investigators said the attack appears random.
- On Saturday, the NYPD arrested Sayed Mohassib, 27, a Department of Education employee and former police officer, charging him with second-degree murder in the October 30 stabbing death of Brooklyn jogger Katie Suarez, 28.
- Suarez was attacked while running along the Shore Parkway Greenway in Bath Beach on October 30, with investigators characterizing the fatal stabbing as a random, unprovoked incident that occurred shortly after she spoke with her father by phone.
- Surveillance footage from near the path helped detectives track Mohassib, who reportedly told officers he could not recall the attack but claimed he woke up covered in blood while carrying a knife.
- Following the death, community members held vigils for Suarez, with local officials demanding increased patrols, security cameras, and lighting along the remote waterfront path to improve safety.
- Investigators are continuing their search for the suspected murder weapon, with authorities scouring a sanitation barge in New Jersey and reviewing dashcam footage from the evening of the attack.
