Surrey Schools Seeks $5.5B From B.C. to Address Future Growth, Overcrowding

The plan calls for 29 new schools and 26 site acquisitions as enrolment is projected to rise by 700 to 800 students a year.

  • On June 10, Surrey Schools approved its 2027-28 Five-Year Capital Plan, requesting $5.49 billion from the Ministry of Education and Child Care for 76 major capital projects addressing overcrowding and future enrolment growth.
  • District projections show Surrey Schools could reach approximately 87,000 students by 2035, with secondary schools expected to reach 112.4 per cent capacity despite planned additions, driving the urgent capital investment request.
  • Included in the plan are 29 new schools, 19 additions, 26 site acquisitions, one replacement, one seismic upgrade, and 10 building-envelope projects; vice-chair Garry Thind noted current market conditions make this an ideal time to purchase land.
  • Although the Ministry of Education and Child Care confirmed capital funding will not support moving portable classrooms, the Surrey Teachers Association, CUPE 738, and Surrey District Parent Advisory Council are advocating for additional provincial and federal investment.
  • While areas including Newton and Fleetwood currently have available space, schools in South Surrey and White Rock remain over capacity; the board will reconvene for the 2026-27 school year on Sept. 23.
