'Superstar' runners praised for helping exhausted man finish marathon
Two runners sacrificed personal bests to help Haridasse finish after his legs gave out near the Boston Marathon finish line, and the moment went viral.
- On Monday, April 20, 2026, two runners helped university student Ajay Haridasse cross the Boston Marathon finish line after he collapsed within 200m of the end during the 130th edition of the race.
- Aaron Beggs, 40, from Co Down, Northern Ireland, stopped to assist when Haridasse collapsed, pulling him to his feet. Robson De Oliveira, 36, from Brazil, then caught Haridasse as he stumbled again.
- Although Beggs was on target for a personal best, he prioritized helping Haridasse, finishing in two hours and 44 minutes. Beggs called the decision a "natural instinct," stating "We then carried him roughly 200m up the road."
- A video of the rescue went viral, receiving more than 2 million likes on TikTok and more than 8,000 reposts on Instagram. Beggs told RT News "It has gone crazy," while noting "With all the negativity in the world, it's great to see a bit of positivity."
- De Oliveira plans to return to Boston in 2027, stating "I'll be back here in 2027, God willing, I won't give up on breaking the 2:40 barrier." Beggs is set to run the Belfast Marathon in just over a week.
