LADWP: Sunset Boulevard on Track to Reopen Tonight Following West Hollywood Water Main Repairs
Crews will temporarily repave the road after more than 17 million gallons flooded Sunset Boulevard and damaged businesses and parking garages.
- Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood reopened late Friday, July 24, after more than a week of emergency repairs following the July 16 water main rupture that flooded the area.
- The July 16 failure of a 110-year-old, 36-inch trunk line at Holloway Drive dumped approximately 17 million gallons of water, shifting massive asphalt slabs and flooding garages throughout the neighborhood.
- Crews faced setbacks when a pinhole leak emerged Thursday during repressurization; LADWP isolated the affected section and rerouted water through an existing 8-inch pipeline to maintain service.
- While the street is open, the current repaving is temporary; LADWP will return in the coming weeks to complete permanent street repairs and address a nearby bus pad and sidewalk.
- Following the rupture, LADWP will accelerate the full replacement of the trunk line, a complex four-year infrastructure project originally scheduled to begin in 2031, to enhance system-wide reliability.
