Sudan army drone strike on court session kills 35, rights group says
Rights groups said the strike hit civilians gathered for local hearings and damaged a court building, as drone warfare intensifies in Sudan’s war.
- On Sunday, Sudanese army drones struck a traditional court in Garra al-Zawaya, North Darfur, killing at least 35 people as civilians gathered to attend hearings on local cases and disputes, the Emergency Lawyers group said.
- The strike occurred within the brutal three-year conflict between the Sudanese army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces , commanded by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, with both sides increasingly relying on drone warfare.
- Among those killed were "four tribal leaders and two RSF commanders," a witness told AFP on condition of anonymity, while the RSF's self-declared government condemned the attack as "a horrific crime," reporting 37 dead and 50 wounded.
- Garra al-Zawaya lies about 150 kilometres west of El-Fasher, the army's former stronghold now held by the RSF, while the Sudanese army provided no immediate response to the reported strike.
- UN investigators have stated violence linked to the RSF's siege of El-Fasher bears "the hallmarks of genocide," as more than 1,000 civilians were killed in drone strikes during the first five months of this year.
