Hiker Stanislav Volo, Missing for Five Days in B.C., Is Found Alive
Drones, helicopters and search dogs are aiding the effort as crews focus on technical alpine terrain and a short 911 call, officials said.
- Missing hiker Stanislav Volo, 43, has been found alive after spending six days in the wilderness near Squamish. The Squamish RCMP confirmed he was located and transported to hospital with minor injuries.
- Volo went missing Sunday, Aug. 30, after taking the Sea-to-Sky Gondola to hike the Mount Habrich Loop. A brief 911 call from him on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. intensified search efforts.
- Search manager Tyler Duncan described the Mount Habrich Loop as 'technical, exposed alpine terrain' with 'countless number of gullies' and boulder fields. Crews spent five days navigating this rugged landscape despite rainy weather.
- His sister, Ola Volo, announced the news on Instagram, writing, 'We have found Stas, He's coming home.' She thanked search and rescue crews and the Sea-to-Sky Gondola team for carrying them through the six days.
- The Squamish RCMP is 'incredibly grateful for the assistance' provided by partners, including the RCMP Integrated Police Dog Services, Sgt. Katrina Boehmer said. No further information will be released out of respect for Volo's privacy.
