Strong storms possible Thursday in New Hampshire
Forecasters said damaging winds, hail and heavy downpours are the main threats, while the tornado risk remains low but not zero.
- On Wednesday, parts of the Chicago area faced a risk of severe thunderstorms as a cold front moved through the region. The National Weather Service monitored potential damaging winds, hail, and isolated tornadoes.
- The Storm Prediction Center placed far south suburbs and northwest Indiana under a "slight" risk for severe weather. Chicago, Elgin, and Waukegan remained under a "marginal" risk level, the lower threat category.
- NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Iisha Scott noted the south suburbs and northwest Indiana had the highest chance of storms. The severe weather window began around 12 p.m. and lasted until about 7 p.m. Wednesday.
- Power restoration to Gary and Portage by the Northern Indiana Public Service Company occurred just before the severe weather threat. An August 11 derecho had previously left hundreds of thousands without electricity for up to two weeks.
- Thursday will bring mostly sunny skies with highs in the low 80s. Temperatures will climb next week with many dry days ahead, pushing 90 degrees on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.
