Despite a 44% rise in wholesale turkey prices due to avian viruses, many U.S. stores discount turkeys to maintain affordable retail prices this Thanksgiving, USDA said.
- As of Nov. 17, Datasembly's survey found a basket of 11 Thanksgiving staples cost $58.81, or 4.1% more than last year, while a 10-pound frozen turkey declined 2%.
- After an outbreak that killed more than 2 million U.S. turkeys, avian viruses shrank the U.S. turkey flock to a 40-year low, and the USDA expects wholesale prices to rise 44% this year.
- The American Farm Bureau Federation's tally found Thanksgiving dinner for 10 would cost $55.16, while stores like Aldi and Kroger advertise under-$50 options, and Datasembly reports a 5% decrease in pumpkin prices.
- At Doll's small Michigan farm, Larry Doll sold all 92 turkeys this year at $6.50 per pound, plans to order another 100 hatchlings soon despite fewer local hatcheries available.
- U.S. production trends show tariffs on imported steel and aluminum raising canned good prices, with customers paying 10 to 40 cents more per can, according to Rutgers' Farok Contractor.
