‘A Role Model’: Eustaquio’s Commitment Sets Example for Canadian Men’s Soccer Team
The vice-captain said he wanted to help Canada build toward the Nations League after marrying Constanca Damiao.
Canada vice-captain Stephen Eustaquio joined the national team camp in Montreal for the September FIFA international window, arriving just 48 hours after his wedding to Constanca Damiao in Portugal.
While Eustaquio reported for duty, Canada captain Alphonso Davies remains away on his honeymoon following a late July marriage. Coach Jesse Marsch defended both decisions.
Defender Ralph Priso praised Eustaquio as "a leader" and "an example" for the squad, noting the midfielder's quick return "speaks to the importance" Canadian players attribute to representing their country.
Eustaquio, who recently moved from Porto to Welsh club Swansea, prepares to feature against Peru this Saturday at Stade Saputo before Canada concludes its window next Tuesday in St. Paul, Minn., against the United States.
Focus now shifts toward the World Cup cycle, with Eustaquio aiming to help secure a trophy. The midfielder emphasized the team's previous success acts as a "bridge towards the future" of the program.
