Step aside, children: A Chilean zoo stages an Easter egg hunt with treats for the animals
Zookeepers hid meat, fruit and pellets in decorated containers as the zoo said the event has run for 16 years.
- On Sunday, animal residents at Bioparque Buinzoo in Santiago, Chile, participated in an annual Easter egg hunt, searching for food hidden in themed treats to stimulate natural foraging behavior.
- Zookeepers designed the event to entertain visitors while encouraging species to search for food, as Director Ignacio Idalsoaga explained: "In nature, these animals spend much of their life looking for food."
- Monkeys and lemurs hunted for food in egg-themed packages, while caracals leapt to reach meat snacks and sheep foraged for pellets inside a colorful sphere with holes.
- Idalsoaga clarified the treats were "not chocolate eggs," but rather foods the species would consume in their natural habitat, ensuring safety and authentic enrichment.
- The creative team has maintained this 16-year tradition, with Idalsoaga noting the staff has been "very imaginative this year" in designing enrichment activities for zoo animals.
