Stay tuned Cincinnati: WKRP is coming to town for real, North Carolina station's director says
Oak City Media plans to use the sale proceeds to fund a new nonprofit that will help launch other broadcasters.
- D.P. McIntire, executive director of the North Carolina-based nonprofit Oak City Media, confirmed Friday that the famous WKRP call sign is being sold and will return to Cincinnati. McIntire, who manages the low-power station in Raleigh, cannot disclose further details due to a contract.
- The call sign was acquired from the Federal Communications Commission over a decade ago for a low-power station based at McIntire's home. Launched on Nov. 30, 2015, the station was inspired by the fictional radio station from the 1978–1982 sitcom 'WKRP in Cincinnati.'
- Oak City Media operates as a nonprofit limited to 100 watts, with a broadcast range between four and 12 miles. The station features an irreverent format, including a two-hour show called 'Weird Al and Friends,' mimicking the original television series' satirical spirit.
- Proceeds from the sale will fund a new nonprofit venture called Independent Broadcast Consultants. McIntire said the organization will be 'geared specifically toward helping these new broadcasters get up and running' as the nonprofit transitions leadership.
- After running the station for 10 years, the 56-year-old McIntire decided to pass leadership to younger members. He expressed pride in his stewardship, stating, 'And we have been very, very, very proud to have been a steward of that legacy.
