State provides status update on suspected Anaconda shooter
Brown’s trial remains on hold as he undergoes mental health evaluations and restoration treatment at the Montana State Hospital, officials said.
On Wednesday, Anaconda-Deer Lodge County District Court Judge Jeffrey Dahood granted a 60-day stay on proceedings for Michael Paul Brown, who appeared virtually from the Montana State Hospital for ongoing mental health treatment.
Prosecutors charged Brown with four counts of deliberate homicide regarding the August 1, 2025, shooting at the Owl Bar in Anaconda, which triggered a weeklong manhunt before his capture.
Most charging documents will become public this Friday following a Montana Supreme Court ruling, though the document detailing Brown's mental health evaluation remains sealed from public view.
Dahood scheduled another status hearing 60 days from Wednesday to monitor Brown's restoration progress while the State's request to keep mental health evaluation documents temporarily sealed remains pending.
Nine months after the tragedy, Owl Bar owner David Gwerder reflected on Anaconda's ongoing struggle, saying, "The community and the whole state really came together for the victims.
