Ukrainian officials say Starshield restrictions still in place, despite Trump’s claims

  • On Thursday, President Donald Trump claimed Elon Musk restored Ukraine's access to the military-grade Starshield service, but Ukrainian officials stated on Friday that restrictions remain in place, complicating Kyiv's war effort against Russia.
  • American newspapers reported last week that Trump requested Musk restore full satellite network access; Trump declined to confirm his involvement on Thursday, saying, "Whether I called or whether somebody else called doesnt make any difference."
  • A Ukrainian Defense Ministry source told CNN on Friday morning that "there is currently no confirmation that the restrictions have been lifted" and "instances of signal loss are still being observed" for ordnance travelling above 100 miles per hour.
  • These limitations hinder interceptor drones defending against Russian attacks, as restored access is "clearly not enough to intercept jet powered drones," a source told CNN. The connection drops for 10 to 15 seconds, impacting reconnaissance systems.
  • Ukraine remains waiting for clarification from the White House regarding the situation. Serhiy Beskrestnov, an advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, confirmed that no lifting of restrictions on Starlink has been observed.
