Sri Lanka Hails India’s Operation Sagar Bandhu, Honours INS Vikrant Among Foreign Vessels for Cyclone Relief
- On Jan 1, the Sri Lanka Navy honoured eight foreign vessels, including two from India, for aid after Cyclone Ditwah caused over 600 deaths.
- When Ditwah made landfall on November 27, eight foreign naval warships had arrived for the International Fleet Review 2025 and were redirected to support relief efforts.
- Operation Sagar Bandhu delivered over 1,100 tonnes of relief, about 14.5 tons of medicines, and 60 tons of equipment, while Mi-17 helicopters of the Indian Air Force operated for more than two weeks.
- Following the relief, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya thanked diplomatic teams, and India on December 23 announced a USD 350 million reconstruction package, including USD 350 million in concessional Lines of Credit and USD 100 million of grants.
- A Navy release framed the assistance as highlighting global and regional cooperation, noting Operation Sagar Bandhu began on the day Ditwah made landfall.
