In North Royalton, hundreds gathered at an annual community-event-turned-fundraiser, showing support for the family of the late Building Commissioner David Smerek.

The mayor of North Royalton and members of City Council held a special meeting on Monday night, to "fast track" payment of benefits that slain Building Commissioner David Smerek earned during his public service, to members of his grieving family.
