‘Spark in a Powder Keg’: Iran Is About to Double Gasoline Prices for Many, and Some are Sleeping In Their Cars Overnight to Fill Up

Officials said the higher tier will rise from 5,000 to 10,000 tomans per liter as Iran tries to curb shortages and excess demand.

Iran will double its third-tier gasoline price from Monday to contain fuel shortages — drivers are sleeping in cars to queue, and the country burns fifteen million liters a day more than it makes. A lawmaker warned a hike could be a spark in a powder keg; the last one set off nationwide unrest. Crude loadings have collapsed to barely a tenth of March levels under the blockade.
