Spain's largest wildfire of the year burns for a fifth day as new heatwave looms

Authorities say more than 1,000 residents were evacuated as firefighters battled extreme fire behavior and nearly 30 communities were surrounded.

  • In just four days, a wildfire in Spain has scorched around 16,000 hectares across the Sierra Norte of Guadalajara, becoming the largest blaze the country has seen this year. The fire started near La Mierla and continues burning for a fifth day.
  • Authorities have deployed more than 800 emergency personnel and around 170 aerial and ground resources, including members of Spain's Military Emergency Unit , to contain the blaze. More than 20 communities have been evacuated as officials describe the fire as exhibiting extreme fire behaviour.
  • Millions of trees have been destroyed and wildlife habitats devastated within the Sierra Norte Natural Park. Tourism has ground to a halt across the region, with rural businesses facing significant economic losses from the advancing flames.
  • Emergency accommodation has been set up for residents displaced from their homes as evacuation continues. Despite the scale of the disaster, the UME has prioritized defending properties and ensuring safe evacuation of nearby communities.
  • Authorities are examining whether agricultural machinery operating in the area may have caused the blaze, though the investigation remains ongoing. Across Spain, high temperatures and strong winds continue to leave forests at extreme risk as local authorities plan long-term recovery efforts.
