SpaceX Falcon 9 Launch Creates ‘Space Jellyfish’
The Falcon 9 carried a Dragon cargo capsule on SpaceX’s 35th ISS resupply mission, and the exhaust cloud was visible across several states.
On Tuesday, Some Kentuckians observed a glowing "space jellyfish" in the southern sky at approximately 6:30 a.m., originating from a SpaceX Falcon launch in Florida more than 800 miles away.
SpaceX launched its 35th resupply mission to the International Space Station on Tuesday from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, with the Falcon rocket carrying cargo to the ISS.
As the Falcon climbs higher, engine exhaust expels water vapor and carbon dioxide, which freezes into ice crystals in the cold upper atmosphere and becomes visible against the darker sky.
Pitts, an assistant professor at Eastern Kentucky University, explained that the exhaust becomes more visible at higher altitudes, allowing the glowing trail to be seen across multiple states.
A robotic Dragon capsule is on a 53-hour journey to the ISS following the launch, carrying solar panels, replacement tools, and new experiments for microgravity research.
