Minnesota Man Has Bitter Reflections on a Failed Gubernatorial Candidacy
Patterson and running mate JT Thompson collected about 1,300 of the 2,000 signatures needed after a two-week statewide drive.
The gubernatorial bid ended after Steve Patterson failed to secure ballot access. He collected about 1,300 of the 2,000 signatures required by the 2023 Legislature, falling short of the threshold.
A 2023 law required political parties to abide by stricter organization rules. Legislators also raised the major party status threshold to 8% of the vote from 5%, further complicating independent access.
Patterson and Thompson held signature-gathering events from May 19 to June 2. Stops included Rochester and the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, where the duo, supported by The Gunslingers, sought to reach the ballot.
Calling the two-party system hostile to independents, Patterson noted that major parties "want to keep repeating the same tired arguments," rather than addressing voter concerns.
Last year, Patterson launched the Moderate Majority to address ignored issues. Driven by frustrations with COVID rules that impacted his Rochester brewery, he sought to challenge Republican and Democratic dominance.
