No. 1 South Carolina, Texas, Vanderbilt Lead Loaded SEC Women’s Basketball Field
South Carolina is picked to repeat as SEC champion as Texas, Vanderbilt and LSU bring back stars and add key transfers and recruits.
South Carolina enters the season as the favorite to win the Southeastern Conference, aiming to reclaim the title from defending champion Texas, which defeated the Gamecocks 78-61 in Greenville last season.
Although the Gamecocks remain the class of the SEC, reaching four of the last five national championship games, coach Staley says her team must improve mental toughness after recent tournament exits left them emotionally drained.
South Carolina bolstered its roster with the return of Ashlyn Watkins and Chloe Kitts, the 2025 SEC Tournament MVP who missed last season with a torn ACL. Transfer Jordan Lee joins the team, averaging 13.2 points per game.
Challengers are also reloading, with LSU coach Kim Mulkey adding 17-year-old, 6-foot-5 recruit Anna Minaeva from Russia. Vanderbilt returns SEC preseason player of the year Mikayla Blakes and freshman of the year Aubrey Galvan under coach Shea Ralph.
Three SEC programs feature new leadership this season, with Pauline Love taking over at Alabama, Tammi Reiss at Florida, and Ayla Guzzardo at Georgia. Seven teams are ranked in the AP Top 25 to open the season.
