“It’s an Easy Decision”: Red Sox Star Sonny Gray Makes His Future Plans Clear With a Bold Take
Gray says he plans to pitch in 2027 and remains open to returning to Boston after a 3-year, $75 million deal ended.
On Friday, pitcher Sonny Gray confirmed his intention to pitch in 2027, expressing openness to returning to the Boston Red Sox after considering retirement following his team's playoff elimination.
Gray recorded a career-best 2.72 ERA and won 18 games for Boston in 2026 after the Red Sox acquired him from the St. Louis Cardinals last November, establishing himself as a dominant regular-season pitcher.
Manager Chad Tracy pulled Gray after 70 pitches during Game two of the American League Wild Card Series, frustrating the pitcher; Tracy later explained he maintains a strong working relationship with Gray despite the decision.
Gray will become a free agent following the World Series, as his mutual option on his three-year, $75 million contract with the Cardinals is expected to be declined by nearly all teams.
"I still want to win a World Series, whether that is Boston or with whoever wants me," Gray said, underscoring his ambition to build on his successful 2026 campaign.
