Friends Remember Michigan Mother on 8 Killed in Soccer Game Shooting
Police say the suspect also tried to shoot another child, and two schools closed temporarily as the community coped with the killings.
On Friday, 18-year-old Rafael Martinez-Lopez appeared in a Grand Rapids, Michigan court on murder charges, three days after police say a dispute over an informal soccer game escalated into a fatal shooting.
The fatal confrontation began Tuesday when Martinez-Lopez's younger brother was turned down from a soccer game, prompting the shooting that killed a teenager and a woman trying to help.
Victims included 15-year-old Jeremiah Griffin-Cuevas and 38-year-old Savanah Rubio, killed while helping; Martinez-Lopez also allegedly attempted to shoot another child, but the weapon malfunctioned.
Martinez-Lopez acknowledged the charges in court and was ordered to remain in jail without bond; two local schools closed temporarily this week as the community copes with the tragedy.
Mildred Griffin, mother of Jeremiah Griffin-Cuevas, told WOOD-TV, "Somebody stole from me, and that's something I can't get back," describing her son as a regular churchgoer.
