Residents Return Home After Train Derailment Prompts Evacuations in Northern Minnesota
About 18 rail cars derailed near the Canadian border; no injuries or leaks reported as crews investigate and monitor air quality, officials said.
On Saturday, March 28, 42 Canadian National Railway freight cars derailed near Warroad, Minnesota, prompting the Roseau County Sheriff's Office to establish a precautionary evacuation zone along Highway 313.
Two of the derailed cars are classified as "dangerous goods," Warroad Fire Chief Damian McMillin confirmed, though no evidence of leaks, fires, or injuries has been reported.
Authorities set an evacuation zone extending from 400th Street to County Road 137 along Highway 313, with law enforcement visiting about six or seven nearby homes to notify residents.
Cleanup crews and heavy machinery are on-site to upright the derailed cars, with officials anticipating the operation will require two or three days to complete.
Investigations into the derailment's cause remain ongoing as hazardous materials teams monitor air quality. Warroad lies about 170 kilometres southeast of Winnipeg, positioned along Lake of the Woods.
