Somali Gang Task Force Needed After Homecoming Shooting, Eden Prairie Mayor Says
Eden Prairie Mayor Ron Case called for a regional task force to unite state, county, and local law enforcement, schools, and Somali community leaders in combating gang-related gun violence and preventing youth gang involvement.
Following a shooting outside Eden Prairie High School's homecoming game Friday night, mounting gun violence prompted the proposal; the incident injured two Somali teenagers from St. Paul, ages 18 and 17, and forced evacuation of Aerie Stadium.
Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges, Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt, and Edina Police Chief Todd Milburn attributed recent incidents to "social media beef," while noting that lack of witness cooperation hampers their investigations.
Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher plans to meet later this week with Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans and 40 other law enforcement agencies to develop a regional task force strategy.
Metro resident Farhina Budul urged leaders to address violence without "casting a shadow of contempt" over the state's 100,000-plus-strong Somali community, warning that responses must not stigmatize an entire population.
