Solberg has no regrets after WRC title near-miss: “It hurts a lot”
Solberg’s late error gave Evans the championship after a final-stage duel that left the Welshman as Britain’s first WRC champion since 2001.
On Sunday, Elfyn Evans clinched his first World Rally Championship title at Rally Italia Sardegna, becoming Britain's first world champion since 2001.
Teammate Oliver Solberg lost control two corners from the final stage finish, careering down a bank and losing the bonus points needed to secure the championship.
After five runner-up finishes in the last six years, Evans finally secured the crown, joining Englishman Richard Burns and Scottish driver Colin McRae as Britain's only WRC champions.
Nine-Time world champion Sebastien Ogier called Evans the "deserved champion," while Toyota sporting director Kaj Lindstrom said the team was "really happy" for him.
This victory concludes the current era, with new technical regulations set to take effect next year; final standings left Evans on 243 points, ahead of Solberg on 238 and Pajari on 237.
