EU Delays Methane Rules on Oil and Gas Imports for a Year
The proposal aims to avoid fuel-supply pressures as some governments and companies warn the rules could disrupt imports.
- On Oct 14, the European Commission proposed a one-year delay to methane emissions rules for oil and gas imports, which were intended to require foreign suppliers to monitor and report emissions.
- Pressure from the White House, France, and ExxonMobil drove the move; French President Emmanuel Macron requested the delay last month, warning of legal risks and fuel supply disruptions during the Iran war.
- "This one-year postponement is designed to help avoid additional pressures on the security of supply of imported fossil fuels," the Commission stated, as foreign firms allegedly fear legal issues could disrupt LNG shipments to Europe.
- Five Socialists and Democrats MEPs, including Mohammed Chahim, insisted any postponement must be "strictly limited to a single year," urging the Commission to withdraw the proposal if parliament demands a longer delay.
- Some countries, including Czechia and Italy, have demanded a three-year extension, though importers would have until 31 May 2029 to prove compliance for imports made during 2028.
