Slater set for F1 practice debut with Audi at Mexico
The rookie runs will give Slater valuable Formula 1 race-weekend experience before he steps up to Formula 2 next season.
Audi announced Thursday that 18-year-old British driver Freddie Slater will make his Formula One practice debut at next week's Mexico City Grand Prix, with a second outing at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix the following week.
To meet F1's mandatory rookie driver requirements, which stipulate teams must field a novice four times per season, Audi will deploy Slater, the first recruit to Audi's driver development programme.
Previously an Italian F4 and Formula Regional European champion, Slater finished as the Formula Three runner-up this season and is confirmed to graduate to Formula Two with Invicta Racing next year.
Audi racing director Allan McNish stated, "It is the right time for Freddie to step up," while Slater said these sessions are "another opportunity to keep gaining on-track experience."
Following the path of fellow Trident Formula Three racers, Slater will use the Mexico and Brazil sessions as critical evaluation before his Formula Two season begins.
