Skier Killed in Avalanche in Boss Basin, First Colorado Ski Death of the Season
- On March 7, a person reported missing in the Boss Basin area was found dead in avalanche debris at sunrise Sunday and identified as David Pickett-Heaps by the Eagle County Coroner's Office.
- The Colorado Avalanche Information Center had warned of considerable danger after days of heavy mountain snow late last week, with spotters reporting more than 23 inches in parts of the Indian Peaks Wilderness and 6 inches near the slide area.
- Rescuers observed ski and snowmobile tracks leading into the avalanche path; the Colorado Avalanche Information Center said the victim used a snowmobile to access the area but was on skis when the slide occurred.
- The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation, and CAIC will publish a full accident report, following the first Colorado avalanche fatality of the 2025–26 season, CAIC says.
- CAIC forecasted CONSIDERABLE danger on Sunday for the Elk and Sawatch Ranges, warning wind-drifted slopes remain most dangerous and a foot or more of new snow can quickly raise instability.
