Officers investigated after black child suffers broken knee in police search

The watchdog is probing force used, possible race bias and aftercare after six officers were investigated, with one child left with a fractured knee.

  • The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating six Metropolitan Police officers after a 16-year-old boy suffered a fractured knee when forced off his e-bike in Tottenham last April.
  • Officers stopped the teenager on April 26 last year citing concerns about his "manner of riding and general behaviour." Police forced him off the bike and searched him, but found nothing.
  • The boy sustained a fractured knee and was not provided with immediate first aid after being removed from the bike. He was later diagnosed at a hospital after police attempted custody.
  • Three constables face criminal investigation for assault and Serious Crime Act offences, while three others are under investigation for potential misconduct. The Independent Office is examining whether race or age influenced their actions.
  • IOPC director Amanda Rowe said, "The use of stop and search is an important policing tool- however, it must be used proportionately." The office will decide whether to refer officers to the Crown Prosecution Service.
