SIU investigating death of man in Barrie, Ont.
The 29-year-old man was wanted on an arrest warrant and died after police used a stun gun following a traffic stop for impaired driving, the SIU said.
- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit began probing after a 29-year-old man died following a traffic stop near Dunlop Street W. and Frances Street.
- Barrie police stopped the vehicle for suspected impaired driving and learned the 29-year-old man passenger was wanted on an arrest warrant; he fled on foot and was found nearby after a short pursuit.
- A conducted energy weapon was used during the encounter, and police found the man in the backyard of a residence on Frances Street, the SIU said.
- The SIU, which is mandated to investigate deaths linked to police conduct, is probing after a woman was arrested and charged with operation while impaired with a blood alcohol level over 80.
