Sister Cities: Port Alberni and Abashiri, Japan prepare to celebrate 40 years
The celebration includes a live-streamed civic ceremony, cultural performances and a history booklet tracing 40 years of exchanges, organizers said.
On Saturday, Port Alberni and Abashiri will celebrate 40 years of Sister City ties, with both communities coming together at Echo Centre from 3-6 p.m., including an official civic ceremony at 5 p.m. that coincides with morning in Abashiri.
The relationship began in 1986 when nearly 70 Port Alberni residents travelled to Abashiri for the first cultural exchange, with reciprocal visits marking each decade as both cities deepened their cross-Pacific bond.
Sherri McKinnon from the Port Alberni Twinning Society said the 40th anniversary is deeply personal, as the Sister Cities program "has truly shaped both my life and my career," beginning in 1986 when her parents hosted a young Abashiri student.
Mayors Yoichi Mizutani of Abashiri and Sharie Minions of Port Alberni will exchange greetings during Saturday's event, which features cultural performances from Alberni Valley and Nuu-chah-nulth participants alongside a Japanese cultural showcase.
A bilingual history booklet documents the 40-year partnership through photos from both cities, while live-streaming will extend the 2026 celebration beyond Saturday, preserving the bond for future generations.
