Major update after missing grandmother found dead in cattle dip
A post-mortem identified the 73-year-old missing grandmother and led police to widen a homicide probe and seek witnesses who used the isolated trail.
Police launched a homicide investigation on Tuesday after identifying the body of 73-year-old missing grandmother Yvonne Whear. NSW Police Acting Superintendent Matt Zimmer confirmed forensic results elevated the case to a homicide inquiry.
Whear disappeared on February 19 while driving near Murwillumbah, sparking an eight-month search. Although investigators recovered her car from the Rous River last month, the vehicle was empty, leaving her disappearance a mystery until now.
Two trail bike riders discovered Whear's body submerged in a stock dip on a Terragon property on October 5. Zimmer described the location as "overgrown" and "very isolated," a detail investigators are now prioritizing.
Police are seeking those who frequented the trail or cattle dip area since February 19 to provide information. Zimmer stated "Someone knows what happened to Yvonne," urging contact with Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Whear's family has endured months of uncertainty while awaiting answers regarding her disappearance. Investigators emphasized that even minor information could prove crucial to establishing the circumstances of her death and holding those responsible to account.
