Sharpsmart strengthens NHS waste service resilience and greener logistics in Normanton
The upgrade adds more than 23,000 ft2 of operational space and 11 electric vehicle charge points to improve resilience and lower-carbon logistics.
Sharpsmart completed a major improvement project at its Normanton Plant, adding more than 23,000 ft2 of usable operational space and new safety features to strengthen one of its key UK sites supporting NHS healthcare waste services.
Before the works, the Normanton Plant rear yard suffered from poor drainage, flooding, and limited usable space, making vehicle movement difficult. Growing demand for healthcare waste services prompted Sharpsmart to improve site resilience and efficiency.
Construction included underground drainage, water management systems, and flood defence controls, completed in approximately six and a half weeks. The site now features 11 electric vehicle charge points and an 80 kW DC fast-charging solution.
Upgraded fencing, electric gates, and cleaner hard-standing areas now allow vehicles to move through the depot more efficiently. Dameon Ward, Sharpsmart's national engineering manager, said: "This was never just about creating more yard space."
Following the development, Sharpsmart worked with ecology specialists to support biodiversity offsetting through planting and long-term maintenance. The project reflects the company's continued commitment to building safer, more sustainable healthcare waste infrastructure across the UK.
