PA Governor Josh Shapiro Elected to Lead Chesapeake Bay Executive Council
Shapiro will lead efforts reducing nitrogen pollution by tenfold and advancing sustainable agriculture to boost the Chesapeake Bay watershed’s environmental and economic health.
- On Tuesday, Gov. Josh Shapiro was unanimously elected chair of the Chesapeake Executive Council at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, succeeding Maryland Gov. Wes Moore after a nomination by Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin.
- The Chesapeake Executive Council serves as the primary policy body for restoring the Chesapeake Bay and represents the nine signatories to the 2014 Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement, with Pennsylvania leading for the first time in 20 years.
- Pennsylvania reported planting 945 miles of riparian buffers and restoring 139 miles of streams, reducing nitrogen pollution by ten times the prior decade, with the Susquehanna River section earning the watershed's second-best grade.
- Members also adopted governance changes including a new Policy Steering Committee and directed staff to recommend tribal participation pathways by July 1, 2026, with Gov. Josh Shapiro serving a one-year term.
- Earlier this year, Shapiro was also elected chair of the Conference of Great Lakes St. Lawrence Governors and Premiers, complementing his Chesapeake role and supporting farmers and tourism stakeholders.
