Several hurt after car slams into San Francisco church

Seven people were evaluated for mostly minor injuries and three hospitalized after a sedan crashed into Good Hope Baptist Church, authorities say the incident was accidental.

  • On Sunday at about 1:30 p.m., a car crashed into Good Hope Baptist Church or MiShalom Church at 551 Nevada Street in Bernal Heights, San Francisco.
  • San Francisco Fire Department officials said the crash appears unintentional because the driver is associated with the address, while video footage suggested a possible pedal error but remains conjecture.
  • Seven people evaluated and three people transported to hospital, Lt. Ken Smith, San Francisco Fire Department, said, 'That vehicle was inside the building up to the door... No one was struck by the car.'
  • Crews evacuated the church and called the Department of Building and Inspection and an additional Ambulance code 3; DBI deemed the building safe and returned it to the church owner by about 2:29–2:30 p.m.
  • First responders said injuries likely came from flying debris, the driver remained and spoke with police, and early reports named the building Good Hope Baptist Church and MiShalom Church.
