Serbian Scientists Experiment With Mealworms To Degrade Polystyrene
An anonymous reader quotes a report from Reuters: Serbian scientists have been experimenting with mealworms as a way to break down polystyrene. Larisa Ilijin, a principal research fellow at Belgrade's Institute for Biology, said the scientists had discovered that mealworms can digest various plastics, including polystyrene, which is used in packaging, insulation and food containers. In the project endorsed by the government and the United Nation…
There are never too many ways to combat plastic, and Serbian researchers are preparing another breakthrough. As reported by Reuters, they are conducting experiments using mealworm larvae (Tenebrio molitor), which, as it turns out, are excellent at digesting plastics, including polystyrene. The material is commonly used in packaging, food containers, and insulation, and its natural decomposition can take up to 500 years.
