The notorious war criminal Ratko Mladić had no official state funeral in Serbia, but Belgrade showed how clear it is that he is killing the former commander of the Bosnian Serb army.
The mechanism is simple. First, Mladić turns from a convict into a hero. Then, any criticism of his state send-off is declared an attack on Serbia. Then the students, the opposition and the critical media associate themselves with those who are "attacking Serbia". In the end, the voter is not asked whether he lives well and whether the state is functioning, but whether he is with his people or against them.
