September LNG Shipments Through Hormuz Hit Highest Since Start of US-Iran War
- LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz reached a monthly high in September since the US-Israeli war on Iran began, according to data from analytics firms despite persistent security concerns.
- To avoid detection, many vessels perform so-called "dark transits" by switching off their Automatic Identification System transponders; the waterway historically carried roughly a fifth of global crude oil and LNG supplies.
- Analytics firm Kpler reported 21 LNG cargoes exited the strait in September, while Global Energy identified 19 shipments, including QatarEnergy-linked vessels Al Kharaitiyat and Al Gharrafa.
- Managed by Germany's Pronav Ship Management, the Milaha Qatar is one of three vessels that recently reappeared off India's coast and is now offloading cargo at the Hazira port.
- Senior principal analyst Eric Yep at Global Energy noted that if acceleration continues, transits could recover to 25% of pre-war levels, though sustaining throughput through winter remains a key concern.
