"September 2026 was exceptionally hot and dry" in mainland Portugal, explained the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
With unprecedented average and maximum temperatures since 1931, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere, the last month was also marked by two heat waves and more than a dozen measuring stations with temperature records.
The average air temperature was 23.41 degrees, corresponding to an anomaly of +2.91 °C compared to the 1991-2020 reference period, the institute specified.
Maximum temperature 4.21 degrees above normal and only 12.7 mm of rain. Portugal lived in September one of the most extreme months in almost a century.
