Senate President Says He’ll Vote ‘No’ on Property Tax Cuts
Albritton says the measure could cut local revenue by up to 30% in rural counties and threaten law enforcement and emergency services.
Florida Senate President Ben Albritton announced he will vote against Amendment 3, despite helping place the property tax measure on the November ballot, citing public-safety risks in rural counties.
Amendment 3 would raise the homestead exemption to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028, aiming to cut property taxes for homesteaded homeowners while excluding school taxes.
The Florida Sheriffs Association warns the measure could eliminate up to 30% of resources for rural counties; Florida TaxWatch estimates Amendment 3 would diminish local property tax revenue by nearly $5 billion statewide.
During a Wednesday discussion with Miami-Dade County officials, Governor Ron DeSantis downplayed rural impact concerns, arguing the move represents a "bottom up" effort driven by grassroots support rather than political elites.
Albritton suggested the Florida Taxation and Budget Reform Commission, scheduled to convene next year, presents an "ideal opportunity" to design property tax reform that protects communities least able to absorb revenue losses.
