Expert Warns Parents About Dangerous ‘Benadryl Challenge' After Teen's Death. Here's What to Know
Poison center calls for teenage Benadryl incidents more than doubled in the first five months of this year, health officials said.
An Oklahoma teenager died after participating in the viral "Benadryl Challenge," a social media trend encouraging users to ingest large doses of the antihistamine to hallucinate.
The American Academy of Pediatrics reported the trend started in 2020 and has since spread across multiple social media platforms, putting children at heightened risk.
ABC News confirmed that poison center calls for teenage incidents involving Benadryl or diphenhydramine more than doubled during the first five months of this year compared to last year.
Dr. Chandler Hicks, a psychiatrist at OU Health, warns the challenge "can cause heart arrhythmia. It can cause death," while social media drives mental health-related sensation-seeking.
Following his 15-year-old daughter's death, Richard Presson urged parents to monitor children's online activity and watch for signs of dangerous trending challenges.
