Beetaloo Gas Set to Flow to Help Power Territory
More than 40 terajoules a day will enter the grid as the Beetaloo Basin begins supplying homes, businesses and industry, the NT Government said.
- On Tuesday, gas began flowing from Tamboran Resources' Shenandoah South Pilot Project into the Northern Territory grid, marking the start of commercial production from the Beetaloo Basin with more than 40 terajoules a day.
- Eight years after the Northern Territory lifted its fracking moratorium, the Shenandoah South development reached this milestone through a 50/50 joint venture between Tamboran Resources Corporation and Daly Waters Energy.
- Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro called the development "a pivotal moment in the Territory's history," as the project delivers enough gas to support local industry and power generation needs.
- Environmental groups, including the Environment Centre NT, criticized the project as a "climate bomb," citing concerns that fracking could threaten water supplies providing 90 per cent of the territory's water needs.
- Tamboran plans to expand capacity at the Sturt Plateau Compression Facility to 100 terajoules a day by mid-2028, targeting both domestic markets and potential LNG export facilities.
